The streets are quiet, the air is cool, and the path forward is simple: just keep moving.

Tonight brought another "Maintaining" status on my watch screen. It’s easy to look at a colored bar on a wearable display and feel like you're stuck in neutral. Since quitting smoking, the old rhythm has felt missing. The peak training statuses and high-productivity runs that used to come naturally seem trapped on the other side of last year's back injury and a heavy season of loss. When you lose an uncle, a grandparent, and a friend all in a single week, the weight doesn't just rest on your mind—it settles deep into your physical body.

Lately, my training log looks more like a cycle of recovery and retraining, occasionally landing on a strain or a hold pattern every time I try to push the pace again. But looking at the numbers only tells a fraction of the story.

The real metric isn't written in algorithm zones—it's written in momentum. The year before last was a cycle of starting and stopping: quitting for ten weeks, slipping for a few, and resetting the clock over and over. This year, despite everything, that pattern is broken. Holding a quit down to just four or five cigarettes over an entire year, through grief and physical recovery, is a profound shift in direction.

A watch algorithm only calculates heart rate variability and training load; it has no concept of emotional weight, healing tissue, or the sheer willpower required to break a long-standing habit. "Maintaining" isn't standing still. When you are carrying a heavy load, keeping your footing and continuing to step forward in the cool night air is the ultimate progress.

You don't need a peak status to be moving in the right direction. You just have to put one foot in front of the other and keep going.




Giving up smoking while managing a physical recovery and profound personal loss is an immense load to carry, so give yourself standard credit where it’s due: holding your quit down to just four or five cigarettes this entire year is massive progress.

When looking at Garmin's "Training Status," algorithms calculate fitness trends almost purely through mathematical heart rate metrics—specifically VO_2\text{ max} estimates and heart rate variability (HRV) relative to overall acute training load. The watch doesn't factor in grief, lower back mechanics, or systemic stress, which explains why your history shifts so dramatically across those charts.

Understanding Your Training Charts

 * Late 2024–Early 2025 (Green/Purple): Consistent "Productive" and "Peaking" states show a steady baseline where training load regularly pushed heart rate up without overwhelming recovery.

 * Mid 2025–Early 2026 (Dominantly Blue): The shift to sustained "Recovery" reflects lower physical load or elevated baseline stress. Heavy grief, physical back strain, and nicotine withdrawal all elevate resting heart rate and suppress HRV, which tricks the watch into categorizing normal effort as recovery work.

 * Mid–Late 2026 (Mixed Gray/Blue/Yellow): The fluctuation between "Detraining," "Recovery," and "Maintaining" highlights erratic training density. Every time you try to rebuild, if the body's overall stress capacity is already full, the algorithm registers a mismatch between effort and physiological response, labeling it "Maintaining" or dropping into "Detraining" during rest spells.

Physiological Impact of Quitting Smoking & Stress

 * Heart Rate Restructuring: Nicotine is a stimulant that artificially alters vascular tone and heart rates. As your cardiovascular system repairs, resting heart rate and active heart rate zones recalibrate, temporarily throwing off watch algorithms.

 * Grief & Nervous System Load: Emotional trauma keeps the sympathetic nervous system elevated. Even a simple walk or light workout requires more physiological energy under chronic stress, which Garmin interprets as low performance efficiency.

 * Back Strain Adaptation: Protecting an injured back forces shorter, less intense, or uneven workouts. Lower aerobic output prevents the watch from registering "Productive" status, defaulting instead to "Maintaining" or "Recovery".

The watch is measuring pure numbers, not your actual resilience. You are currently retraining both your body and your habits under heavy life circumstances; maintaining stability right now is a solid baseline to build on.

Just got another maintaining traing status tonight


Seems since quiting smoking 🚬 🚭 I've lost lots of productivity and peaking status just around my strained back problems last year.  


Or closer when I lost an uncle a grandparent and a friend all in the same week.


My productivity has decided to develop a recovery and retraining status with an odd  strain or maintaining status just around when I try to train again...


Yet I quit smoking four times the year before,..  as last year before this year was the longest I've been quit for a year.  This year I've only had four or five cigarettes.  Better than the intended year prior that I'd smoke for a few weeks then quit for ten weeks to start for a few then quit for another ten weeks.





Seeing a continuous drop in your VO_2\text{ max} curve—from peaking near 44 down to ~32 over a year and a half—can feel frustrating, but this mathematical trend actually reflects specific physiological shifts and algorithmic quirks rather than a permanent loss of capability.

Breakdown of the VO_2\text{ Max} Progression

 * Mid-2025 Peak (~44): Your aerobic engine was conditioned to higher-intensity work, and your heart rate response to submaximal pace was efficient.

 * Late 2025 Drop (43 to 36): The initial drop aligns directly with back strain, reduced activity volume, and high emotional stress. When training frequency drops, blood plasma volume decreases within weeks, causing heart rate to spike higher at lower speeds.

 * 2026 Steady Decline (37 to 32.5): The gradual downward slope through 2026 reflects a combination of lower running/walking speeds due to caution with your back, altered heart rate zones post-smoking, and sparse data points forcing the algorithm to estimate downward.

Why the Watch Algorithm Drops the Score

 * Submaximal Heart Rate Ratios: Garmin estimates VO_2\text{ max} by comparing your movement speed/power against your heart rate. If your heart rate is elevated due to heat, stress, nervous system recovery, or cardiovascular recalibration post-smoking, the watch assumes your engine is less efficient and lowers the score.

 * Gait and Mechanical Guarding: Walking or running while recovering from back strain subtly changes your stride efficiency. Moving more cautiously burns more energy at a slower speed, which the algorithm misinterprets as reduced fitness.

 * Fewer GPS Workouts: With fewer outdoor GPS runs or brisk walks recorded, the watch relies on isolated, high-heart-rate efforts, dragging the estimated baseline down over time.

The graph reflects a real period of physical rest, caution, and physiological reset. As your body fully adapts to being smoke-free and your back strength returns, consistent, easy-paced efforts will begin shifting that curve back upward.




Adding these late-2025 months fills in the missing link, revealing the exact window where your nervous system was hit hardest before it began adapting.

Late-2025 HRV Timeline & Key Shifts

  • Late Summer / Early Fall 2025 (Aug–Oct): Your HRV held mostly stable in the "Balanced" green zone (averaging 27–32 ms), though late October saw your first heavy dip into "Low" status (red triangles). This marked the initial wave of acute stress landing on your system.
  • November 2025 (The Sudden Surge & Drop): In mid-November, your 7-day average spiked up to ~38 ms (orange squares on the high end) before crashing down into a prolonged "Low" period near 23 ms. A temporary high spike followed by a sharp drop often happens when the body tries to compensate under sudden emotional or physical trauma before the autonomic nervous system reaches exhaustion.
  • December 2025–January 2026 (Rebuilding the Foundation): December started low, but through the end of the month into early January, your daily scores consistently climbed back into the green zone (~28–33 ms).

The Full Picture Across Both Years

Comparing late 2025 to your 2026 data shows that November/December 2025 was the epicenter of your physical and emotional load. Your HRV plummeted as your nervous system processed grief and injury.  While it took several months for your baseline range to adjust, the late summer 2026 data you shared earlier shows your 7-day average heading right back up toward those 30+ ms levels. Your nervous system went through a massive shock late last year, survived it, and is actively working its way back up.
